Bachelor of English Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University Unud Holds The Enggano Research Talk, as part of Collaboration with the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics, University of Oxford
Bachelor of English Literature Study Program and Linguistics Study Program of Master and Doctoral Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University hosted the seminar and workshop The Enggano Linguistic Documentation and Lexicography: A Reflection. The event lasted for two days in a hybrid manner and was broadcasted live via the Media FIB Youtube channel, from 9 to 10 January 2025 at the Ir. Soekarno Room, Poerbatjaraka Building, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. This event is a collaborative project between FIB Unud and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Unud, Australian National University (ANU), and the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics, University of Oxford.
The first day of the event was opened by a speech from Drs. I Wayan Arka, M.A., Ph.D. as the representative of the Enggano research team. In his speech, he said that this research was a collaboration between multinational universities and institutions, including: Udayana University, University of Oxford, Australian National University, National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN), and several others.
Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, I Nyoman Aryawibawa, SS, MA, Ph.D., in his speech which also opened the event expressed his appreciation for the implementation of this activity. He appreciated this research which not only documented the language but also empowered the community being studied. This spirit must certainly be developed in research at Udayana University, especially in the Faculty of Humanities.
The first session was from the Associate Prof. Bradley McDonnell & Blaine Billings with the topic of Divergence and Convergence in Sumatra and the Barrier Islands. The moderator for the first session was a Lecturer of the bachelor of English Literature, Gede Primahadi Rajeg, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D. This session discussed a general overview of the languages in Sumatra (especially in the northern part of Sumatra) then continued with a more detailed discussion on the divergence and convergence and their implications for history in the region. After the speakers delivered the material, a Q and A session was opened, which was actively participated by the participants.
The second session was a presentation on the Preliminary Report on Creating “Balinese Valency Dictionary” by Prof. Drs. Ketut Artawa, MA, Ph.D. In the presentation, several things were discussed, such as the Valency in Balinese including its clause structure, verbal morphology, verb list, and verbs obtained from variation or alternation. Like the first presentation, a Q and A session was held after the material presented. One of the questions was about how to present the correct valence pattern in a dictionary, in order to make the readers understand the concept of valence more easily.
The event continued with the presentation of the third material by Dr. Dora Amalia who presented material related to the Lexicography Landscape in Indonesia, accompanied by the same moderator, Dr. Ni Made Ayu Widiastuti, S.S., M.Hum. The material presented discussed the development of lexicography in Indonesia, the history and sustainability of lexicography practices in Indonesia. This includes what efforts are planned by the Language Agency, such as several collaborative projects that will be implemented in the coming years. The question and answer session was followed enthusiastically by the participants, which can be seen from the many questions and discussions raised.
The last and closing speaker of this seminar was Drs. I Wayan Arka, MA, Ph.D. He talkeb about The Multidimensionality of the Enggano Projects: A Personal Reflection on Bridging Linguistic Inquiries and Community Relevance. The speaker was accompanied by a moderator from the Bachelor of English Literature, I Komang Sumaryana Putra, S.S., M.Hum. In the material, the overall picture of the Enggano project was discussed, as well as reflections on the project in the form of what has been successfully obtained, challenges, and problems that have not been resolved. Then, an important finding in this Enggano project was also discussed, which was the voice system in the Enggano language.
The event was attended by a number of linguistic experts, academics, and various other elements, including: the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Dra. Ni Luh Watiniasih, M.Sc., Ph.D., coordinator of the Bachelor of English Literature, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Mulyawan S.S., M.Hum.., coordinator of the Linguistics Study Program Master Program, Dr. Ketut Widya Purnawati, S.S., M.Hum., and the coordinator of the Linguistics Study Program for the Doctoral who was also one of the speakers at this seminar, Prof. Dr. Ketut Artawa, MA, Ph.D., a number of linguistics professors at Udayana University, and other participants who not only come from linguistics backgrounds but also from various disciplines.
