In collaboration with the University of Oxford, FIB Unud held a seminar "The Documentation and Lexicography of the Enggano Language"

The English Literature study program in collaboration with Masters and Doctoral degrees in Linguistics, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Udayana University (FIB Unud) held a Seminar on the topic "The Documentation and Lexicography of the Enggano language" on Monday, March 18 2024 at the Ir. Meeting Room. Soekarno, FIB Unud, Jalan Pulau Nias Number 13 Denpasar.


 

The participants who attended this activity were Master's and Doctoral students in Linguistics FIB Unud as well as lecturers in the English Literature study program. Apart from the participants, also present were the Dean of FIB Unud, representatives of the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Unud and the Coordinator of the English Literature Undergraduate Study Program FIB Unud.

 


The seminar activities were carried out in collaboration with the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, the University of Oxford and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on the Humanities and Social Sciences (CIRHSS). The seminar was attended by four speakers, namely:


1. Drs. I Wayan Arka, M.A., Ph.D., lecturer in the English Literature study program at FIB Unud, with material entitled A socio-ethno-linguistic journey in Enggano: Insights, challenges, and paths forward;

2. Dr. Charlotte Hemmings, a post-doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, the University of Oxford, presented the topic Investigating Enggano morphosyntax using data from historical corpora and language documentation: Challenges and opportunities;

3. Gede Primahadi Wijaya Rajeg, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., lecturer in the English Literature study program FIB Unud, with material entitled Aspects in curating lexical resources for Enggano, and

4. Cokorda Rai Adi Paramartha, Ph.D., lecturer at the FMIPA Unud Information Technology study program, who presented material entitled Crafting connectivity: A user-centered approach to developing a web-based system for historical and contemporary Enggano language.

 


Dean of FIB Unud, I Nyoman Aryawibawa, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. in his speech stated that research and documentation on various regional languages in Indonesia, one of which is Enggano, is important to preserve the regional languages. He is also proud because of the involvement of FIB researchers and collaboration with the University of Oxford.

 


Three researchers from FIB Unud, Drs. I Wayan Arka, M.A., Ph.D., Gede Primahadi Wijaya Rajeg, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D. and Prof. Ketut Artawa, M.A., were involved in research entitled Lexical Recourses for Enggano, a threatened language of Indonesia, which was carried out with researchers from the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, the University of Oxford.


The implementation of this seminar was welcomed enthusiastically by the participants, as evidenced by the warm discussion that occurred after the speakers explained their respective materials. (nm)
