The dissertation being examined was entitled "Humor in Religious Sermons in Sociopragmatic Studies". This dissertation explains the form of humor used by preachers in delivering religious lectures, the function of this humor and its meaning. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the forms of humor used by preachers, analyze the function of humor and find the meaning used by preachers in delivering religious sermons.

This dissertation obtained results, namely that the forms of humor are line humor, dialogue humor, poetry humor, story humor, and word play humor. The two functions of humor are not only considered as a means to entertain, but also as an educational tool, social criticism and an effective release of emotions. The third meaning of humor comes from the ambiguity of words, phrases and sentences. This ambiguity of meaning is at the lexicon, grammatical and truth conditions of a statement. The meaning used includes associations, feelings, or concepts that are not directly revealed by the context thus, they can produce a deeper impression or add an emotional dimension.

Meanwhile, from this dissertation it was found that the use of words, phrases and sentences used in forms of humor is in line with the presentation in the Al-Qur'an and Hadith. The use of humor in da'wah can help preachers present religious messages and teachings more easily to the congregation. This is in line with the found function of humor which covers several significant aspects in human life, including psychological, social and intellectual functions. Explanation of the personal, social and educational functions of humor in da'wah becomes a strategic communication tool that can entertain, educate, criticize and help individuals release emotions. The meaning of humor created from ambiguity and contrast of meaning provides an understanding of the implied meaning which helps the speaker in facilitating understanding and acceptance of religious messages for the audiences.

Prof. Dr. I Nengah Sudipa, M.A. as the promoter said that this dissertation has opened up space for humor data to be analyzed from a sociolinguistic and pragmatic perspective. These two points of view reveal the results of a synthesis of humor theories describing novelty, namely, first, communication strategies in relation to forms of humor that are in harmony with the Al-Quran and Hadith. Second, the function of humor is in accordance with moral messages and teachings and includes education. The three meanings of humor created by ambiguity and contrast help deeper and more effective understanding by the audience. "We need to continue to deepen these three findings so that in the future we will produce a standard model in relation to religious lectures, not only related to Islam but also for other religions." concluded Prof. Sudipa.
