Bachelor of English Literature Holds Workshop on Language Documentation Methods through Elan and FLEx as Part of Two Days of The Enggano Language Documentation and Lexicography: A Reflection
Friday, January 10, 2025, was the 2nd day of The Enggano Language Documentation and Lexicography: A Reflection. On the 2nd day of activities, training was conducted on the use of Elan and Flex in the language documentation process. The activities on the 2nd day were held in the Ir. Soekarno Room, Poerbatjaraka Building, Faculty of Humanities.
The workshop was led by two instructors, Charlotte Hemmings and Gede Primahadi W. Rajeg. The workshop began with the first instructor, Charlotte Hemmings from the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics, University of Oxford, presenting an overview of linguistic field methods and relevant tools that can be used to support the data collection and processing (e.g., ELAN and Fieldwork Language Explorer [FLEx]). These tools can assist in processing linguistic data in the context of language documentation (e.g., transcribing, recording, and managing the lexical data).
In her presentation, Charlotte Hemmings also conveyed about the language diversity and language endangered that underlie the Enggano project. It was due to the fact that the Enggano language is included in the Oral language, which has a higher potential for extinction compared to languages that have writing/scripts, or written languages. The material was continued with a detailed explanation of the theory of language documentation and the implementation of field methods in language research.
The second material was the practical use of ELAN and FLEx presented by Gede Primahadi W. Rajeg. This second material was divided into two sessions. The first session was the practice of using ELAN, which consisted of how to import the audio or video samples into the ELAN application, then continued with how to work with the ELAN transcription template, perform transcription, and segmentation of the speech, as well as how to export the transcription into a FLEx-compatible file for further interlinear or morpheme-by-morpheme glossing.
The second session continued with the practice of using the FLEx application, Overview of the interface (esp. LEXICON and TEXT AND WORDS features), creating a new FLEx project, importing ELAN-based transcription for analyses (i.e., interlinear glossing) (TEXT AND WORDS feature, and adding a simple lexicon (LEXICON feature).
The event was closed with a closing remark from Drs. I Wayan Arka, MA, Ph.D. He expressed his appreciation to all the committees who had carried out the activities well. Furthermore, he also delivered his gratitude to the participants who had followed the activities until the end. Ending the closing, he said that what was learned today must be accompanied by a lot of practice in the future. Of course, it is hoped that this project will not stop here, and there is still a possibility of continuing with similar projects in the coming year.
