Overview of the Bachelor of Old Javanese Literature

Sastra Indonesia – FIB UNUD

Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Udayana

Bachelor OF
old Javanese literature

Welcome to the Old Javanese Literature Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. As one of the study programs playing a vital role in preserving the nation's civilization and culture, we have achieved an accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT).

Our Vision and Mission Our primary vision is to establish an Old Javanese Literature Study Program that is excellent, independent, and culture-oriented at both national and international levels. To achieve this, we provide character-building and professional education, focusing on research and community service through the protection, development, and utilization of the wealth of Old Javanese language and literature for the welfare of society.

Graduate Profile and Competencies Every graduate will earn a Bachelor of Arts (S.S.) degree with specific and rare competencies. Students are prepared to become:

  1. Academicians and Researchers: Experts in studying linguistics, literature, and ancient manuscript philology.
  2. Translators and Manuscript Conservators: Skilled in translating ancient texts and performing physical as well as digital conservation on palm-leaf (lontar) media.
  3. Literary Critics and Communicators: Capable of providing in-depth textual analysis and serving as a communication bridge in socio-cultural fields.
  4. Cultural Entrepreneurs: Possessing an independent spirit to develop creative industries based on the cultural richness of the archipelago.

Curriculum and Learning Experience This study program implements a curriculum with a total workload of 146 credits, designed to be completed in 8 semesters. Students will delve into unique subjects that combine tradition and technology, such as:

  • Philology and Linguistics: Fundamentals of ancient manuscript study and linguistic theory.
  • Balinese Manuscript Studies: Including Balinese script spelling (Pasang Aksara Bali), palm-leaf writing techniques, and the computerization of the Balinese script.
  • Traditional Arts: Such as Mewirama and Kidung (traditional chanting), integrated with the use of information technology. We also facilitate the "Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka" (Emancipated Learning) program through internships, student exchanges, and humanitarian projects.

Facilities and Academic Environment The learning process is supported by high-quality educators holding Doctoral degrees and Professorships. We provide specialized facilities such as the Nyastra and Lontar Laboratory, Phonetics Laboratory, and a library with a very rich collection of manuscript references. Students are also encouraged to be active in student organizations, such as Sanggar Poerbatjaraka, to hone their artistic talents.

Join Us New student admissions are open officially through national and independent selection paths for both domestic and international applicants. Join us in guarding and reviving the noble values of civilization through the study of Old Javanese Literature.
