The Achievement of I Gusti Bagus Ryan Pradnyana as a Third Place Winner in the 7th Sakura Cup Japanese Speech Contest

The 7th Sakura Cup Japanese Speech Contest was organized by the Bali Japan Club and held in Kuta, Bali. This national-level competition was participated in by 37 contestants from various regions. After undergoing a strict selection process, 10 selected participants advanced to the offline speech round, which took place on February 8, 2026.

In this competition, I Gusti Bagus Ryan Pradnyana delivered a speech entitled 「先生から教えた勇気」 (The Courage Taught by a Sensei). The theme was chosen as a form of appreciation and reflection on the role of a sensei who had guided Bagus since he first began learning Japanese during his senior high school years. Through this speech, Bagus conveyed a personal and emotional experience regarding his journey in learning the Japanese language, as well as the value of courage he gained throughout the process.

The preparation process undertaken by Bagus was not an easy one. It involved memorizing the speech script, improving pronunciation and intonation, practicing expressions, and enhancing stage presence in order to deliver the speech with confidence. With guidance from lecturers and support from friends and family, Bagus was able to compose and refine his speech script, allowing him to successfully pass the selection stage and perform in the final round of the competition.

The 7th Sakura Cup Japanese Speech Contest lasted for approximately five hours, beginning with participant registration, opening remarks, additional programs, and the speech contest itself. In the university/general category, participants were required to deliver a speech with a duration of 5–7 minutes. The judging criteria consisted of content and theme (30%)Japanese language proficiency (20%)expression (20%), and a question-and-answer session (30%). Through intense competition, Bagus successfully achieved Third Place in the 7th Sakura Cup Japanese Speech Contest.

This achievement was not merely regarded as a competition result, but also as a meaningful learning and self-development process. Through his participation in this contest, Bagus experienced significant improvement in his Japanese public speaking skills and gained a deeper understanding of self-confidence in his own abilities. Moving forward, he hopes that this experience will serve as motivation to continue challenging himself, developing his skills, and facing new opportunities in both academic and non-academic fields.
