Raising the Issue of Plagiarism, a Lecturer from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Udayana University achieves Doctoral Degree in Cultural Studies from the Faculty of Humanities Udayana University

The Doctoral programme of Cultural Studies Faculty of Humanities has a new Doctor, Dr. Ni Putu Premierita Haryanti, S.Sos., S.E., M.A. through an open examination held in August 21, 2026. It was conducted in the Soekarno Room, Poerbatjaraka Building, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Udayana. Promovenda has been acclaimed as the 291th doctor of the faculty and the 308th of the Cultural Studies in the Doctoral programme with very satisfactory distinction through her dissertation titled the Deconstruction of Plagiarism Discourse in Higher Education Institution in Bali.

The examination held on Friday August 21, 2026  led by Prof. Dr. Drs. I Nyoman Suarka, M.Hum.. The promotor, Co-promotor I and Co-promotor II were Prof. Dr. Anak Agung Ngurah Anom Kumbara, M.A. and Prof. Dr. I Nengah Punia, M.S.i.. The examiners team such as Dr. I Wayan Suardiana, M.Hum., Dr. Ida Ayu Laksmita Sari, S.Hum., M.Hum., Dr. I Gede Mawan, S.Sn., M.Si., Dr. Putri Anggreni, S.E., M.Pd., and Prof. Dr. Phil. I Ketut Ardhana, M.A..

In her dissertation, Promovenda raised the issue of plagiarism despite the many regulations that have been established. Plagiarism has evolved from the act of copying without citation to the use of ghostwriting service, and data manipulation, among other things. It is a common practice for universities to regulate plagiarism through similarity checker application. However, those applications do not entirely prevent plagiarism from taking place. Evolving technologies also come with a new challenge of ambiguity; where is the line between plagiarism and technological assistance?

Promovenda focused her research on plagiarism happening in Balinese universities, along with the ideologies and implications. Plagiarism in Bali happened due to academic demand and limited time. There is also a productivity demand that requires lecturers and students to produce scientific writings as something that has to be quickly done, not only as an output of knowledge creation.

There are several findings in this study. Promovenda found that plagiarism Discourse is in line with Derrida’s opinion regarding how meaning is never singular and open to many interpretations. The second question is the change of meaning of knowledge, ownership, and originality caused by academic integrity regulation and technology development. This is because academic integrity has turned into fulfillment of administrative standards.

After the presentation, the examination was continued into a question-and-answer session. This session addressed the relevance of universities employing threshold standards and utilizing detection software, in response to the promovenda's discussion regarding the existing paradox. The promovenda noted that while these measures remain relevant, they cannot serve as the sole benchmark for plagiarism. Furthermore, the candidate emphasized the need to shift the approach from control-oriented regulations toward guidance, mentorship, and the enhancement of academic integrity.

The examination continued with a brief address by the promoter, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, M.A., M.Litt.. He highlighted the relevance of the topic addressed by promovenda to issues currently prevalent in the academic world. He noted that plagiarism is a serious matter, as its consequences are felt both during the course of study and in the future. Those active in academia must work accountably and avoid negligence. He added that this dissertation serves as a call to remain vigilant against engaging in unethical conduct by avoiding plagiarism.

In her closing statement, promovenda conveyed her thanks to the dean of Faculty of Humanities of Universitas Udayana, the examiner team, lecturers of the doctorate of Cultural Studies programme, the administration staff, the dean’s office staff of Faculty of Social and Political Science, the Library and Information Science programme coordinator of Universitas Udayana, lecturers of the Library Science programme, and other lecturers of the Faculty of Social and Political Science. She dedicated a thanks to families and friends in attendance. Promovenda realised that the conclusion of her study marks the beginning of putting the acquired knowledge into practice and providing broader benefits.
