2025 International Language Month Webinar with the theme “Indonesian Language on the Global Stage”
Denpasar, October 10, 2025 — In commemoration of Language Month 2025, which coincides with Youth Pledge Day, the Indonesian Literature Student's Association of Udayana University held an international webinar themed “Indonesian Language on the Global Stage” on Friday, October 10, 2025. This event was held online via Zoom Meeting and attended in by participants from various regions, not only in Indonesia but also from other countries, with diverse backgrounds in terms of age and profession. This event was held to commemorate the birth of Indonesian as the national language. This event featured three speakers from three different countries, namely Mr. I Kadek Purnawan, a lecturer from Indonesia who works and teaches in Japan; Dr. Suhailee Sohnui, M.Pd, an educator specializing in the Indonesian language; and Ida Ayu Putri Adityarini, S.Pd., M.Pd., a member of the BIPA team from the Bali Provincial Language Center. The webinar was also moderated by Putri Sri Aryana, an alumnus of the Bachelor of Indonesian Literature at Udayana University.
In their presentations, the speakers discussed teaching Indonesian to foreign speakers (BIPA). All three described their experiences and challenges in introducing Indonesian in an international environment. Ms. Suhailee, the first speaker, described the journey and development of the BIPA program at Chiang Mai University, Thailand, taught Indonesian alongside several other Asian languages. She also discussed teaching approaches and methods, as well as various activities that support the Indonesian language learning process. This discussion provided a clear picture of how Indonesian is able to compete with other world languages. Through this activity, Udayana University is committed to support the promotion of Indonesian as a global language.
The second speaker, Mr. Awan, emphasized that teaching Indonesian as a foreign language (BIPA) and cultural exchange are important means of strengthening relations between the two countries. He focused on the development, challenges, and strategies of teaching Indonesian to foreign speakers. The webinar also highlighted the significant contribution of language learning as an instrument of cultural diplomacy. This webinar underscored the importance of the Indonesian language as a tool for diplomacy and international communication. Activities such as this are a strategic step by Udayana University in expanding the reach of the Indonesian language in the world.
The Chairman of the Committee, Jeremy Albert Panjaitan, said in his speech that this webinar was a means to share experiences and broaden participants' knowledge about the role of Indonesian language at the global level. He explained that this activity was not only a form of commemoration of the birth of Indonesian language, but also how Indonesian language could be accepted and taught abroad. In addition, he expected the younger generation to be more active in contributing to the promotion of Indonesian language in the international arena. With the 2025 International Language Month Webinar, Udayana University has become increasingly recognized as an institution that consistently preserves Indonesian language and culture.
Mrs. Dayu Rini, as the last speaker, presented the material “BIPA Program: Big Dreams and Opportunities,” which described a new direction for Indonesian language in diplomacy through education and culture. Mrs. Dayu Rini also emphasized that BIPA is not only a language program, but also a forum for building national identity at the global level and career opportunities at the local level. BIPA can serve as a bridge in the development of language, culture, and economy. Through this presentation, it is clear that teaching Indonesian to Foreign Speakers (BIPA) plays a strategic role in introducing Indonesian culture to the international community. The BIPA program at Udayana University is expected to become a model for innovative Indonesian language learning that is globally competitive. This activity also demonstrates Udayana University's commitment to support the 2025 International Language Month Webinar.
Participants were enthusiastic throughout the event, active in the question and answer session. Various questions arose regarding BIPA teaching methods, adaptation strategies in foreign environments, and the prospects of Indonesian as a language of international communication. The event closed with the presentation of certificates to the speakers and words of thanks to all participants and the committee who had participated in making this activity a success. This international webinar was a form of appreciation for the diversity and richness of the Indonesian language, which is becoming increasingly well-known on the world stage. The enthusiasm of the participants showed the high level of interest in BIPA teaching and career opportunities in the field of language.
