AI Innovation for Balinese Script: Bachelor of English Literature conducted Workshop to Prepare "Nyastra AI" Web Development
Denpasar, July 9, 2026 – As a concrete effort
to support the Impactful Campus program, the Bachelor of English Literature
Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, held a hybrid Focus Group
Discussion (FGD) titled "Developing the Generative AI 'Nyastra' Web"
at the Grand Mirah Hotel, Denpasar. This event marks a strategic step for the
program in delivering a technological innovation that can be directly utilised
by school partners to strengthen the teaching of the Balinese language,
specifically its script.
The event was officially opened by Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Parthama, SS., M.Hum., Coordinator of the English Literature Study Program. In his address, he emphasised that this initiative aligns with the program's research strategic plan, which is oriented towards socio-cultural impact. "The development of the Generative AI 'Nyastra' is a breakthrough that combines technological sophistication with efforts to preserve local cultural wisdom. This is a form of our commitment to produce research that is not only academic but also applicable and directly addresses educational needs in the community," stated Mr. Parthama.
The FGD intensively discussed key development aspects, including the design of an intuitive system workflow and the preparation of robust technical infrastructure. The discussions resulted in an agreement to design a platform with a dual-mode interface: a "Quick Mode" for instant transliteration and an "Expert Mode" for deeper contextual adjustments, along with special features such as a "Worksheet Creator" designed based directly on input from teacher partners. Furthermore, technical needs such as server specifications, data security, and hosting strategies to support AI model performance were also discussed.
A concrete outcome of this FGD is the establishment of a comprehensive workflow for the 'Nyastra' AI model, spanning from text input and context analysis to Balinese script output, equipped with various utility options. Moreover, the forum successfully formulated a strategic development plan that covers task division, work timelines, and a continuous evaluation mechanism incorporating feedback from all stakeholders.
By engaging in
multi-party collaboration—from the research team and industry partners (DUDI)
to school partners and teachers—this activity not only refined the technical
plan but also strengthened the bridge between academia and end users. This step
further solidifies the role of the English Literature Study Program as a
pioneer in leveraging cutting-edge technology for cultural preservation, while
also serving as a tangible contributor to realizing the Impactful Campus vision
championed by the Ministry.
