Bachelor of Balinese Literature Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University held “Digital Dictionary Festival”

Thursday, February 26, 2026, the Bachelor of Balinese Literature Faculty of Humanities Udayana University held the “Digital Dictionary Festival” activity in the Ir. Soekarno Room, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. The activity was held in order to celebrate the 2026 Balinese Language Month this February. The Digital Dictionary Festival was carried out by transcribing the Balinese dictionary into digital form, complete with Balinese script, using the Bali Simbar Dwijendra application as a tool. The activity was participated in by all active students of the Bachelor of Balinese Literature from the 2022 to 2025 cohorts, guided by Balinese Literature lecturers, the Program Coordinator of Balinese Literature, and the Advisor of the Balinese Literature Program Association, who also joined in and supported the activity.

Drs. I Gde Nala Antara, M. Hum explained that compiling this digital dictionary is not merely a matter of compiling vocabulary, but rather the direct application of the knowledge acquired by students of the Bachelor of Balinese Literature, from phonology to semantics. “This is also the application and implementation of the knowledge that students have acquired during their studies in Balinese Literature.” This Balinese dictionary has also been reorganized with the 2023 spelling improvements and the addition of new vocabulary that will be developed into a digital version.

Drs. I Ketut Ngurah Sulibra, M. Hum, Coordinator of the Bachelor of Balinese Literature, said that students are the forerunners of the preservation of the Balinese language and script, so their involvement in compiling the digital dictionary is a tangible contribution to make it easier for the next generation to learn. “So, the Balinese dictionary will contain words, their scripts, their meanings in Latin letters, and their derivatives,” he explained. This compilation is also integrated with courses such as phonology, morphology, and semantics, and each student will work on approximately 22 pages.

This activity is not limited to academic activities, but also serves as a platform for us, the youth of Bali, to preserve the Balinese language and script in today's digital era. Through this Digital Dictionary Festival, it is hoped that young people can utilize existing technological developments as a means to maintain and preserve the existence of Balinese cultural heritage such as: language, script, and Balinese literature. Not only that, this activity also aims to commemorate the 2026 Balinese Language Month.
