Bachelor of English Literature Lecturers Become Guest Speaker at the International Research Conference on Language and Community, at Palawan State University, Philippines

On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the International Research Conference on Language and Community was held by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Palawan State University, Santo Niño College Foundation, Inc., Commission on Higher Education (CHED), National Museum of the Philippines, OCSEAN Philippines, Western Philippines University, the City Government of Puerto Princesa, the Provincial Government of Palawan, and Kiwanis International. The event took place at the Amphitheater on the Main Campus of Palawan State University in Puerto Princesa City. Presented as guest speakers at the conference were Prof. Dr. Dra. I Gusti Ayu Gde Sosiowati, M.A., and Putu Wahyu Widiatmika, S.S., M.Hum., lecturers from the Bachelor of English Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University.


The conference aimed to bring together academics, researchers, and policymakers from various parts of the world to discuss the preservation of languages and cultural heritage in the Philippines and Indonesia. The core agenda of this conference is the presentation and discussion of research to produce concrete strategies for the preservation and promotion of indigenous languages and traditions in the Philippines and Indonesia. There are several sessions in the conference. In the academic session, Prof. Dr. Dra. I Gusti Ayu Gde Sosiowati, M.A., presented the results of her research entitled "A Comparative Study on the Hiligaynon Language of the Philippines and the Indonesian Language of Loloan Malay". In her presentation, she explained the comparative study between the two languages. This academic session was followed by a panel discussion session facilitated by Woolsey Lonzon and Dendi Wijaya.


This was followed by a colloquium exploring the role of data science in advancing historical linguistics research across mainland Southeast Asia. Putu Wahyu Widiatmika, along with Dendi Wijaya from the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency, presented a scientific data analysis and new findings on linguistic patterns titled "Tracing Languages in the Philippines and Indonesia: Computational Approach to Historical Linguistics." The colloquium was followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. George Saad. In addition to the presentations, during a cultural break, Putu Wahyu Widiatmika and Ida Bagus Made Ari Segara, S.S., M.Hum. (an alumni of the Linguistics Study Program, Master's Program, and Ancient Javanese Literature Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University) presented a performance titled "Om Shanti." This performance is a powerful Balinese oratorical work that showcases the fusion of storytelling, tradition, and linguistic expression.


Commissioner Carlo B. Ebeo delivered a heartfelt message of gratitude, acknowledging the contributions of the organizers, partners, speakers, and participants who made the event a success. The conference officially concluded with a closing message from Vanessa Marie Antiquin, Vice President of Administration for Santo Niño College Foundation, Inc., who emphasized the crucial role of ongoing collaboration in preserving linguistic and cultural heritage. Academic dialogues foster a deeper understanding of how language, culture, and heritage intersect to shape communities, strengthen identities, and influence policy. The conference created a space for shared knowledge, cultural appreciation, and ongoing partnerships that support inclusive and sustainable heritage development.
