Bachelor of English Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Bina Desa Senganan Kanginan Implement Quality Education at SDN 4 Senganan
Senganan, June 5, 2026—The Bachelor of English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, in collaboration with the Bina Desa students of Senganan Kanginan, conducted a community service program entitled "Creative English Learning for SDN 4 Senganan Students in Supporting Quality Education (SDG 4)." This program targeted 4th to 6th-grade students at SDN 4 Senganan and was attended by the Bina Desa students and the coordinator of the English Literature Study Program, along with the lecturers and teachers of SDN 4 Senganan.
The principal of SDN 4 Senganan, Gusti Ayu Putu Maderi, S.Pd. SD.,in her opening remarks warmly welcomed the community service team from the Bachelor of English Literature . She expressed her deep appreciation and gratitude for the selection of SDN 4 Senganan as the venue for this community service activity.
On the same occasion, Gusti Ayu Putu Maderi also outlined the actual state of her students’ English proficiency, which is still relatively low compared to students in urban areas. This gap is partly due to limited exposure to active English use in the students’ environment. This situation is quite unfortunate, given that English proficiency has become a mandatory requirement in today’s era. Therefore, the school warmly welcomes this program with high hopes. “We hope that the presence of this community service team will not only improve the students’ English skills but also motivate the teachers at our school to develop more creative and meaningful learning processes,” said Gusti Ayu Putu Maderi.
On the same occasion, the Coordinator of Bachelor of English Literature Study Program, Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Parthama, S.S., M.Hum. expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to conduct the community service regarding creative English learning at the school. He explained that this program is a developmental step from the series of Bina Desa activities that the students had previously carried out routinely every Saturday. Concluding his remarks, he expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and excellent coordination from the school.
The implementation of learning process focused on introducing basic vocabulary and applying polite language expressions relevant to the students' daily lives. The main materials provided included the introduction of the names of objects in the classroom (things in the classroom) as well as objects in the home environment (things at home). In addition to enriching basic vocabulary, the students also trained the pupils to practice polite English phrases, such as how to ask for permission, ask for help, and provide appropriate responses.
To create an interactive learning atmosphere and assess the students' level of understanding, the material presentation was accompanied by the completion of practical worksheets. The worksheets were packaged applicatively through various exercise variations, ranging from arranging polite requests, matching expressions with the correct responses, to completing short dialogues on how to borrow items.
In order to maintain the students' enthusiasm and focus, the material presentation was also interspersed with various ice-breaking sessions and educational mini-games in each classroom. This learning by doing approach was creatively implemented by the student teachers. As an illustration, the students were invited to engage in interactive physical games that trained their quick responses to basic English vocabulary instructions. Through this fun, movement-based learning method, the students are expected to absorb the material more easily without feeling burdened.
Hopefully, this community service program can serve as a bridge to build synergy so intensity of learning assistance at SDN 4 Senganan can be maintained and continued in the future. This sustainable effort from the students and lecturers in Desa Adat Senganan Kanginan is expected to be a concrete step in supporting the 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4), which is to ensure quality, inclusive, and enjoyable education for children.
