On Friday, August 22, 2025, the Dissertation Defense of the Linguistics Study Program took place in the Ir. Soekarno Meeting Room, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. Promovendus, I Gusti Ngurah Parthama, S.S., M.Hum., is a lecturer in the English Literature Study Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. He graduated with a GPA of 3.86 and the distinction of "With Honors." He is the 269th (two hundred and thirty-ninth) graduate of the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, and the 275th (two hundred and seventy-fifth) Doctorate in the Linguistics Study Program, Doctoral Program, Udayana University. The defense was led by Prof. Dr. Ketut Artawa, M.A., with the title of his dissertation, which he successfully defended, "Sentimental Discourse on Facebook Social Media."
The Chair of the Examining Team, Prof. Dr. Ketut Artawa, M.A., was accompanied by the Examining Team consisting of: Prof. Dr. I Wayan Pastika, M.S. as Promoter, Prof. Dr. I Made Netra, S.S., M.Hum. as Co-Promoter I, Prof. I Nyoman Aryawibawa, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. as Co-Promoter II. There is also an examining team consisting of Prof. Dr. Drs. I Made Rajeg, M.Hum.; Prof. Dr. Dra. Ni Luh Ketut Mas Indrawati, M.A.; Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Suparwa, M.Hum.; Prof. Dr. Ni Luh Nyoman Seri Malini, S.S., M.Hum.; and Dr. Drs. I Ketut Suar Adnyana, M.Hum. who is an external examiner from Warmadewa University. The dissertation focused by the promovendus is related to the study of sentiment discourse in the form of comments from Facebook users on the pages of CNN Indonesia, Detikcom, and Kompas.
Furthermore, in his presentation, he stated that Facebook is a major social media platform that now provides a space for providing information and responding to information, thus establishing two-way communication. Sentiment discourse is a study that combines critical discourse analysis of the main news text with analysis of sentiment and ideology in user comments. The data was then analyzed using Nvivo 12 Pro software using three coding processes: open coding, which analyzes the basis of comments; axial coding, which connects the relationships between the results of the open coding; and selective coding, which provides broad or general conclusions from the results of the two previous coding processes.
The Promovendus study employed the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method by Fairclough (2013): textual, which focuses on text structure; discursive practices, which examine how texts are produced and distributed; and social practices, which analyze the social situations that encompass and influence news texts. The analysis revealed a variety of sentiments, with a predominance of negative sentiments such as sarcasm and criticism. Comments on the three social media platforms revealed two common ideologies: criticism and nationalism. Economic, religious, and transparency ideologies also emerged. Thus, the ideology of the commentary contradicts the ideology conveyed by the news text. This phenomenon results in a negotiation of contradictory yet complementary meanings.
It can be concluded that the discourse construction of sentiment in user comments on Facebook is understood through three dimensions of critical discourse analysis: textual, discursive practice, and social practice. The analyzed comments exhibited a variety of forms and content of sentiment, with a tendency toward a predominance of negative sentiment. The analysis also revealed ideological clashes between news texts and user comments, where comments often reflected ideologies that contradicted the narrative constructed by the news text. This finding is empirical because it demonstrates that news texts are not entirely neutral, thus triggering critical responses from users. Contextually, this phenomenon demonstrates the dynamics of meaning production in the digital public sphere, which is not singular but rather shaped through negotiations between various ideological interests.
The next item on the agenda was a speech from the promoter of the doctoral program, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Pastika, M.S. He opened his remarks by praising the short time taken for the doctoral program. He expressed his gratitude to the Examining Team, the lecturers from the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, and the doctoral program's family for their support and for being the driving force behind the program's success. According to him, the dissertation on the sentiments conveyed by the doctoral candidate is a novelty that still has many opportunities to explore and develop. Therefore, he hopes that the doctoral candidate's research can be the starting point for similar research in the future.
