Faculty of Humanities Udayana University held a discussion concerning the Repatriation of Lontar Manuscripts

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, a discussion was held regarding the repatriation of cultural heritage objects in the form of lontar manuscripts donated by Leiden University to Udayana University. The discussion took place in the Office of the Vice Dean I on the 1st floor of the Ida Bagus Mantra Building, Faculty of Humanities Udayana University. The discussion was attended by the Dean, the Vice Dean I for Academic Affairs and Planning, the Vice Dean III for Student Affairs, the Coordinator of the Bachelor of Balinese Literature , the Coordinator of the Bachelor of Old Javanese Literature, the Secretary of the Udayana Lontar Unit, and the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Cultural Studies to discuss the technical aspects of returning the manuscripts.


The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities Udayana University, Prof. I Nyoman Aryawibawa, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. highly appreciated the lontar repatriation effort carried out by Leiden University. He also conveyed a message from the Rector who also appreciated the lontar repatriation effort and hoped that the repatriation of lontar could run smoothly. He hopes that this lontar repatriation activity can be accompanied by a seminar on lontar with speakers from Leiden University.


The Coordinator of the Bachelor of Old Javanese Literature, Prof. Dr. Drs. I Nyoman Suarka, M.Hum., appreciates the steps taken by Leiden University as a form of love and respect for Balinese culture. He also strives to ensure that Leiden University receives recognition for its efforts in preserving and protecting Balinese culture at the 8th Balinese Language Month event, which will take place from 1st up to 28th of February 2026. This effort is expected to be an important momentum in strengthening international synergy for the preservation of ancient Balinese manuscripts.
