Faculty of Humanities Udayana University held a seminar series on Language, Literature and Culture entitled Language Policy Revitalization and Development in a hybrid manner on Tuesday, May 14 2024 in the Soekarno Room FIB Denpasar and Webex Meeting. The resource person for this event was Prof. John Myhill, a professor emeritus from the Faculty of Humanities University of Haifa and this seminar was moderated by the lecturer at the English Literature Study Program FIB Unud, Ni Ketut Sri Rahayuni, S.S., M.Hum.


 

This event was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Unud, I Nyoman Aryawibawa, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. In his opening, the dean conveyed the importance of appropriate language policy to maintain and revitalize regional languages in Indonesia which are starting to be abandoned by their speakers. On this occasion the dean also said that FIB Unud would be committed to bringing in world-class speakers for scientific development at FIB Unud.

 


Prof. John Myhill conveyed in his material about his research on almost extinct languages in Africa, especially in South Sudan. In more detail, Prof. Myhill conveyed several problems that occurred due to the lack of precise regulations regarding language use in Africa. "In several African countries, foreign languages are used as the formal language of education, such as English, French or Portuguese, this causes education there to be ineffective," said Prof. Myhill. In this session Prof. Myhill conveyed the urgency of developing regional languages in several ways, one of which is the documentation process by including the language on digital platforms such as Wikipedia.


 

This seminar then closed by giving a certificate to Prof. John Myhill by the head of the FIB Research and Community Service Unit (UP2M), Prof. Dr. I Made Netra, S.S., M.Hum. On this occasion Prof. Netra expressed his gratitude to Prof. Myhill for the seminar hoped to collaborate in future research. "We hope that seminars with world-class speakers like this can increase the number of international publications by the FIB Unud academic community." said Prof. Netra. (gfp)
