FIB Unud Students Win 3rd Place at the 2026 KPKM Expo with "Pulau Plastik" Film Research

DENPASAR – A team of students from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Udayana University, has once again achieved a proud academic milestone. The team, competing in the Student Creativity Program for Social Humanities Research (PKM-RSH) scheme, successfully secured 3rd Place in the competitive exhibition of the Udayana PKM Center KPKM Expo, held on Sunday, October 4, 2026, on the 2nd Floor of the Lecture Building, Udayana University.

This success was achieved by a cross-study program collaboration team within FIB, led by Sufi Amalia (History Study Program). The team members include Rania Cantika Sari (Japanese Literature), Ridwan Hadist Syahputra (Archaeology), Gabriela Tasiana Dewi (English Literature), and Fransiska Novalia Febri Amania (English Literature). During the preparation and implementation of the research, the student team was intensively supervised by a Lecturer from the Archaeology Study Program, Citra Iqliyah Darojah, M.A.

The team's victory was achieved through their research idea titled "Representation of the Environmental Crisis in the Documentary Film Pulau Plastik (2021): A Content Analysis Study on Policy and Lifestyle Narratives". Briefly, this research proposal dissects the issue of the plastic waste crisis in Indonesia which reaches millions of tons and remains poorly managed—through the lens of audiovisual media.

This research conducts a comparative content analysis to see how the documentary film "Pulau Plastik" distributes the responsibility for this ecological crisis. The team compares two main narratives: the policy-industry narrative (focusing on the role of the government, regulations, and producer responsibility) and the individual lifestyle narrative (focusing on consumption behavior and people's waste disposal habits). The ultimate goal of this research is to produce an "Attribution Map of Plastic Crisis Responsibility" that can be used as an evaluation material so that future environmental campaigns or communication can be more balanced and effective.

The 3rd Place achievement at the 2026 Udayana PKM Center KPKM Expo is expected to be an encouragement for the entire academic community of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences to continue innovating, collaborating across disciplines, and being sensitive to crucial issues in society. Congratulations to Sufi Amalia, all team members, and the supervising lecturer for their dedication and outstanding achievements!
