Fostering Early English Proficiency: Bachelor of English Literature Conducts Community Service at Takmung

The Bachelor of English Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Udayana, conducted a community service program entitled "Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Komunikatif bagi Siswa SDN 2 Takmung, Klungkung" on Friday, September 11, 2026. Targeting fourth to sixth-grade students, the initiative was attended by the Study Program Coordinator with the lecturers, and university students, accompanied by the local school teachers. The primary objective of this program was to enhance the students' foundational communication skills and confidence in utilizing English from an early age.

During the implementation, the instructional process focused specifically on the application of Polite English Phrases relevant to the students' daily interactions. The core material encompassed various basic polite expressions, including requesting assistance ("Please", "Could you please...?"), asking for permission ("May I...?"), expressing apologies ("Sorry / I'm sorry"), and demonstrating gratitude alongside appropriate responses ("Thank you", "You're welcome"). Furthermore, the university students guided the elementary pupils in identifying and practicing specific pragmatic functions, such as seeking attention ("Excuse me") and deferring to others ("After you").

To foster an interactive learning environment and assess comprehension levels, the pedagogical delivery was supplemented with a practical worksheet. This assessment tool was designed for applied learning, featuring exercises that required students to construct and complete fill-in-the-blank dialogues using polite requests. The students were instructed to formulate appropriate English requests based on various hypothetical scenarios, ranging from asking for a book to be retrieved from the library to borrowing stationery.

Beyond written assessments, the instructional method incorporated an interactive concentration game (ice-breaking session). This activity served not only to stimulate the classroom atmosphere but also functioned as an engaging participatory approach. Through this mechanism, randomly selected students were called to the front of the classroom to practice their speaking skills. They were encouraged to build confidence by reciting the polite requests they had previously formulated on their worksheets.

Through this intensive and interactive pedagogical approach, the initiative is anticipated to yield a positive and sustainable impact on the language proficiency of the students at SDN 2 Takmung. Additionally, this program serves as a concrete manifestation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, demonstrating the direct societal contribution of the academic community within the Bachelor of English Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Udayana.
