Gede Budi Hartawan’s Achievement in Winning First Place at the 2nd Hiroshima University Sakubun Contest for Indonesian Participants
The 2nd Hiroshima University Sakubun Contest for Indonesian Participants is a Japanese writing competition organized by Hiroshima University in collaboration with Dharma Persada University. The competition was participated in by students from various universities across Indonesia, including Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, and several other higher education institutions. With participants coming from diverse academic backgrounds, the contest was classified as a national-level competition. The writing phase was conducted in November 2025, with the final results announced in February 2026.
In this competition, the organizing committee provided three theme options for participants to choose from. Gede Budi Hartawan selected the third theme, titled “A Japanese Language Teacher Who Inspired My Life: A Message of Gratitude.” The sakubun he submitted was entitled 「割れたレンズに映った希望」 (Hope Reflected in a Cracked Lens). This theme was chosen as a reflection of Budi’s personal experiences as well as an expression of appreciation for the dedication of Japanese language teachers who have had a significant influence on his academic journey.
The sakubun submitted for the competition was required to be between 1,500 and 1,700 characters and written in clear, accessible Japanese while maintaining the ability to engage readers. The competition consisted of several stages, beginning with a written manuscript selection, followed by an interview stage, before the winners were determined.
The process of writing the sakubun involved a lengthy and challenging journey for Budi. One of the main difficulties he faced was composing the opening section of the essay, which required multiple revisions before reaching a satisfactory result. Throughout this process, Budi received continuous guidance and strong support from his supervisor. The greatest challenge in writing the sakubun was conveying emotions vividly and presenting a narrative that felt alive to the readers.
The evaluation of the sakubun competition was based on several criteria, including content quality, originality, authenticity of the work without the use of artificial intelligence (AI), and accuracy in the use of Japanese grammar. The strength of Budi’s sakubun lay in its honest and reflective portrayal of personal experiences, which left a deep impression on the judges.
Based on the final evaluation results, Budi successfully achieved First Place in the 2nd Hiroshima University Sakubun Contest for Indonesian Participants. This achievement served as both an evaluation of his academic abilities and an opportunity to further develop his skills, particularly in Japanese writing. In addition, his participation in this competition enhanced his confidence in using the Japanese language, both in written and spoken forms. Moving forward, Budi hopes to continue improving his abilities and to take part in similar academic competitions in the future.
