Implementing an Impactful Campus Initiative, the University of Udayana organized AI-Based Textbook Writing Workshop to Enhance the Competencies of Teachers at SMPN 1 Kuta
Kuta, July 2, 2026 – In the spirit of “Diktisaintek Berdampak,” Udayana University is providing tangible solutions to enhance teacher competencies in Kuta Village, one of the villages under the guidance of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Through the implementation of the “Udayana Mengabdi” Program, the English Literature Department organized a Workshop on Developing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Based Textbooks for teachers at Kuta State Junior High School 1. The event, which took place from June 29 to July 2, 2026, is a tangible manifestation of the “Impactful Campus” transformation in supporting the autonomy and progress of partner schools.
The workshop held at Kuta State Junior High School No. 1. It began with a warm welcome from the school principal, I Ketut Lokasanti, S.Kom., M.Pd. She expressed her delight at Udayana University’s ongoing commitment. “This established collaboration has truly had a direct and meaningful impact on our teachers. This is a concrete action by Udayana University to provide solutions for enhancing educators’ competencies in the digital age,” she said.
The event was officially opened by the Head of the Badung Regency Education, Youth, and Sports Office, represented by the Technology Development Division, Mr. Agus Ariana Eka Putra, S.H. In his remarks, he emphasized that concrete, impactful programs like this must continue to be nurtured and utilized to the fullest to drive innovation in schools. “This initiative is a prominent example of cross-sector collaboration between higher education institutions and the community, particularly the teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Kuta. This workshop is highly relevant for equipping teachers to develop appropriate teaching materials, while also demonstrating the role of universities in transforming education at the grassroots level,” he explained.
This activity was led directly by the Chair of the Community Service Team, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Mulyawan, S.S., M.Hum., along with a team of faculty members and students. The program aims to improve teachers’ digital literacy, particularly in utilizing AI to create personalized textbooks aligned with their respective Lesson Plans (RPP), thereby supporting schools’ autonomy in developing learning resources. The series of activities was comprehensively designed to ensure optimal and immediate impact.
Day One focused on the academic foundation through mastery of Zotero. Teachers were trained to manage references and citations digitally, thereby establishing a foundation of academic rigor in their writing. Day Two focuses on innovative design, specifically creating personalized textbook frameworks. With the help of platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini, teachers are guided to develop systematic learning structures tailored to the Lesson Implementation Plans for each subject. Day Three is dedicated to developing core content through innovative prompt techniques. Teachers directly practiced using generative AI to develop the narrative for each chapter, optimizing time and creative ideas without sacrificing the depth of the material. The fourth day focused on validating and refining the draft textbooks that had been prepared. Teachers cross-checked references using Zotero and polished the language using Grammarly and Quillbot, resulting in academically sound, high-quality drafts.
Thanks to the enthusiasm and strong commitment to learning shown by all the teachers, the workshop concluded with highly satisfactory results. This initiative successfully produced 14 textbook drafts covering 11 core subjects: Indonesian Language, Hindu Religious Education, Pancasila Education, Mathematics, Natural Sciences (IPA), Social Sciences (IPS), English, Computer Science, Arts and Culture, Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK), as well as Balinese Language.
It is hoped that the success of this workshop will serve as a catalyst for digital transformation at SMP Negeri 1 Kuta, while also strengthening the synergy between the school and the university to continue improving the quality of education in Badung Regency. Furthermore, this achievement not only reaffirms Udayana University’s commitment to fulfilling the Tridharma of Higher Education but also serves as tangible proof that the spirit of “Diktisaintek Berdampak” can be translated into truly transformative programs.
