Linguistics Doctoral Study Program Receives a Visit from Jinan University, Guangzhou, China

The Linguistics Doctoral Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University (FoH Unud) received a visit from Professor Shao Yi, director of the Overseas Heritage and Communication Research Center of Guangdong Language and Culture, Professor Wang Maolin from the Corpus Research Center, College of Chinese Language and Culture, and Qin Weifen – researcher at the Overseas Heritage and Communication Research Center of Guangdong Language and Culture, Jinan University, Guangzhou. The visit was received on Friday, 10 May 2024 at FoH Unud, Jalan Pulau Nias Number 13 Denpasar.

The purpose of the visit is to discuss potential collaboration in the field of language research. According to Prof. Yi, Indonesia is already known as a country rich in language resources, with hundreds of regional languages ​​such as Javanese, Sundanese, Madurese, Minangkabau, making this region important for language research in the Austronesian family. Professor Yi appreciated FoH Unud for consistently contributing to research, protection and development of language resources in Indonesia.

Prof. Yi also stated that China and Indonesia have been friendly neighbors since ancient times, and in recent years, the two countries have experienced rapid development in cooperation in various fields including humanities, education, economics and trade.

During his visit, Prof. Show Yi and his colleagues also expressed their interest in the field of linguistic typology developed in the Linguistics Doctoral program, especially the field of lexical typology.

The offer of research collaboration that will soon be carried out is cross-linguistic lexical typology. What will be focused on in the near future is the lexical typology of the Balinese language. As a linguist with expertise in linguistic typology, Prof. Drs. Ketut Artawa, M.A., Ph.D., Coordinator of the Doctoral Linguistics Study Program FoH Unud, always wants to introduce the 'specialties' of the Balinese language from its various aspects to the world of international linguistics.

Prof. Artawa has written dozens of articles about the Balinese language which are circulating internationally, such as Ergativity and Balinese syntax written by Prof. Drs. Ketut Artawa, M.A, PhD published by Nusa, Atamajaya, Jakarta in 1988. This article was reviewed by two Austronesian language experts, Prof. Aone Van Engelenhoven from Leiden University and his review can be read in the journal KTLV and Dr. Fay Wouk from Auckland University published in the journal Oceanic Linguistics. For the first time the Balinese language appeared in an international journal as a result of the collaboration of Prof. Artawa and Prof. Bary J. Blake with the title Patient Primacy in Balinese, published in the highly reputable journal, Studies in Language Volume 21, number 3, 1977, published by the John Benjamin Publishing Company. Balinese is also present as a book chapter in a book entitled Balinese Valency Classes, a collaboration between Prof. Artawa with Prof. Masayoshi Shibatani. This book is entitled Valency Classes in the world's Languages ​​and was edited by the world's greatest typologists, Prof. Andrej Malchukov and Prof. Bernard Comrie and published by De Gruyter Moton.
