Masters Program in Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University Conducts Community Service Activities in Kesiman Kertalangu Village
The Master of Cultural Studies (S2) Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University carried out Community Service in Kesiman Village, East Denpasar on Friday, June 6, 2025. The community service activity took the theme, "Revitalization of Teba as a Cultural and Ecological Space: Innovation in Upakara Waste Management in the Pura Dalem Tohpati Area". The location of the activity is in Banjar Tohpati, Kesiman Kertalangu Village, East Denpasar District, Denpasar City. This activity collaborates with two partners working in the environmental sector, the Bali Environmental Education Center (PPLH) and the Rural Independent Waste Management Community (PEDE) of Banjar Cemenggaon, Sukawati, Gianyar.
Attended the event were the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Cultural Studies, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, M.Litt., who is also a lecturer in the Masters Program in Cultural Studies. Lecturers Prof. Dr. I Wayan Cika, MS, Dr. Nanang Sutrisno, M.Sc., and Dr. Ida Bagus Putera, M.Hum. and all staff and students of the Masters Program in Cultural Studies, FIB, Unud as many as 26 people. Before the community service activity was carried out, it began with a joint prayer led by Jro Mangku in the courtyard of the Dalem Tohpati Temple. Furthermore, an opening ceremony was held with remarks from both parties.
The welcoming remarks from the Banjar Tohpati Community was represented by Jro Kelian Adat Banjar Tohpati as well as from the representative of FIB Unud by the Coordinator of Cultural Studies Master Program. The event was then continued with a lecture on making bioenzymes and modern teba (back yard area) techniques in the form of making biopore holes in the jeroan area (inner yard) of Pura Dalem Tohpati, Kesiman. The speaker of this was from PPLH Bali, I Nyoman Mulyawan. He presented the topic on how to make bioenzymes and make biopore holes in the yard and in the back yard area (teba). This is in line with the PPLH Bali program called Zero Waste Cities, which discusses and handles a source-based waste processing system and saves natural resources.
This program aims to change the habits of the community, especially young people, by reducing plastic waste and reducing environmental damage for the future of future generations. The Single-Use Plastic Waste Free Program is a program to support the Bali Provincial Governor Regulation Number 97 of 2018 concerning the Restriction of Single-Use Plastic Generation. Meanwhile, the PEDE community was represented by I Wayan Balik, who is also the Head of the Community, by explaining his experience in successfully managing independent waste in Banjar Cemenggaon, Sukawati based on sources.
"These two speakers were chosen because they are closely related to the problems faced by Bali today, which is the chaotic problem of community waste that has not yet received a solution. With the dedication on the problem of waste, especially the creation of biopore holes in the yard and in the back yard of the house and in possible places in public places such as temples, meeting halls, throughout Bali, the problem of waste can be resolved immediately," said the Coordinator of the Master of Cultural Studies Study Program, FIB Unud, Dr. I Wayan Suardiana, M.Hum., in his closing speech.
