Master's Program in Cultural Studies of Faculty of Humanities Udayana University Promotes Environmental Awareness Through Beach Clean-Up and Waste Management Education in Gianyar
Denpasar, June 18, 2026 – The Master’s Program in Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University (FIB Unud), organized a Community Service activity at Lebih Beach, Gianyar Regency, last Saturday (13/06). The event, themed "Kriya Raksa Bhuwana Asri: Strengthening Environmental Awareness Culture through Waste Management Education and Beach Clean-up Action," was carried out to fulfill the third dharma of Higher Education and to welcome the upcoming Hindu holy days of Galungan and Kuningan.
The series of activities was divided into two main agendas: a coastal clean-up action and an educational seminar on source-based waste management. Commencing precisely at 07:00 AM WITA, the participants, consisting of lecturers as well as Master's (S2) and Doctoral (S3) students of Cultural Studies, joined forces to clean the surrounding area of Lebih Beach, including the area behind Pura Segara. Despite the light drizzle, the weather conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants in their efforts to bring a pristine environment to the coastal area renowned for its seafood culinary tourism.
Following the completion of the clean-up action, the event proceeded with an educational session held on the second floor of Jero Jawi Coffee, Resto & Villa, Gianyar. The Coordinator of the Master's Program in Cultural Studies of FIB Unud, Dr. Drs. I Wayan Suardiana, M.Hum., in his opening remarks, expressed his hope that this community service initiative would provide a tangible impact on the community of Lebih Beach, particularly in preparation for the Hindu holy days. The session was also attended by members of the local community.
The seminar featured two prominent guest speakers who are experts in environmental management. The first presentation was delivered by I Wayan Balik Mustiana, an environmental practitioner and youth pioneer of the 'teba modern' (modern backyard pit) program from Cemenggaon, Sukawati. He shared practical insights and strategies for completely managing organic, inorganic, and residual waste at the village level, reflecting on the success of his home village, which has effectively sorted waste since 2011. In his presentation, Balik emphasized that environmental cleanliness is no longer merely a desire, but a shared necessity. “We must instill in our minds that when waste is sorted, it becomes a blessing; but if it is left unsorted, it remains nothing but garbage!” he urged.
The next presentation was delivered by a representative of the Environmental Agency (DLH) of Gianyar Regency, Ni Ketut Sri Umayati. She explained the Gianyar Regency Government’s strategy for source-based waste management, an initiative that has been systematically implemented since 2022. She highlighted the crucial role of the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Waste Treatment Facilities (TPS3R) in processing and distributing waste according to its designated stream to make Gianyar cleaner and more radiant. “The community is expected to experience the benefits of managing waste until it turns into a blessing, while residual waste remains the responsibility of the government moving forward,” Sri Umayati concluded at the end of the question-and-answer session.
This commitment to waste management was also directly echoed by the Village Head (Perbekel) of Lebih, I Wayan Agus Muliana, S.Ap., who affirmed that his village has been practicing source-based waste sorting since the program was initially launched by the Gianyar Regency Government. The community service event concluded with the presentation of a token of appreciation to the Village Head of Lebih by the Coordinator of the Master's Program in Cultural Studies, accompanied by the owner of Jero Jawi, Anak Agung Gde Ari Mahavira
