Preserving Local Wisdom Through Education: SMFIB Udayana University Officially Launches BERFIJAR 2026
The Student Senate of the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University (SMFIB), through the Department of Social and Environmental Affairs, conducted the first week of the Bersama FIB Mengajar (BERFIJAR) program on Saturday, October 3, 2026. This community service, bearing the theme "Jnana Dipa Karuna Wrddhi," will run throughout October. The activity involves the academic community of the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, targeting first to sixth-grade students at SDN 1 Negari. Through direct interaction with the community, this program serves as a platform for students to implement their knowledge, communication skills, and social awareness.
In their remarks, the Chairperson of the Committee, I Made Adi Balarama, along with the SMFIB representative, Ida Ayu Nindya Putri Widiastiti, highlighted the urgency and expectations of the BERFIJAR program. Both expressed that this activity is an essential space for students to apply their knowledge, build networks, and make a tangible impact on society. Furthermore, they hoped that the program would foster creativity and innovation among the students as the next generation, and that it would run smoothly without any obstacles, thanks to the hard work of the entire organizing committee.
Separately, the Principal of SDN 1 Negari, Satriawati Nara Widi, S.Ag., M.Pd., highly appreciated the presence of the students from the Faculty of Humanities who were willing to teach all grade levels from grades one to six. She explained that although the school is located in a rural area, her students continue to achieve an array of outstanding accomplishments in both academic and sports fields.
Meanwhile, the First Vice Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, Dr. I Gede Oeinada, S.S., M.Hum., delivered a point specifically highlighting the teaching agenda that introduces local wisdom to the students, such as the nyurat lontar (writing on palm leaves) and macerita (storytelling) activities. He hoped that the presence of the Faculty of Humanities students would bring joy, provide motivation, and offer new insights to the students of SDN 1 Negari, before officially inaugurating the opening of the BERFIJAR 2026 program.
Regarding the selection of the community service location, the Chairperson of BERFIJAR 2026, I Made Adi Balarama, explained that SDN 1 Negari was chosen because it fits the program's target criteria, namely a middle-category school requiring educational support. In addition, the high enthusiasm and cooperative attitude of the teachers and students in accommodating the program were also primary considerations for the committee.
The implementation of the first week of BERFIJAR 2026 was strengthened by the committee's collaboration with the Balinese Literature Study Program Student Association (Mahasaba) and the Old Javanese Literature Study Program Student Association (Himawan). This inter-study program synergy will be expanded by involving volunteers from all study program student associations within the Faculty of Humanities in upcoming agendas. The initial teaching focused on academic sessions of the Balinese Language subject, guided by Mahasaba with a syllabus tailored for each grade. As a representative example, the third-grade material introduced vocabulary related to time and activities or Galah lan Parikrama, which was packaged interactively through a pre-test, an ice breaking session, and a post-test consisting of a visual image-matching evaluation.
In addition to the academic sessions, the students also implemented the preservation of local wisdom through non-academic activities divided by grade levels. Himawan students took the role of guiding the upper-grade students (grades 4, 5, and 6) in the practice of nyurat lontar. The students were not only introduced to its history but were also invited to directly practice the basic technique of writing their names on palm leaves. Meanwhile, Mahasaba volunteers trained the lower-grade students (grades 1, 2, and 3) through the macerite session to build self-confidence. This session trained the students' courage to confidently introduce themselves in front of the class using both the andap and halus (refined) levels of the Balinese language.
As a continuous follow-up to this community service program, the committee also plans to hand over a donation to SDN 1 Negari. The handover of the assistance is scheduled for the closing ceremony, with the form of the donation to be adjusted based on the committee's observation of the school's actual needs.
