Scientific Speech and Book Launching 67th Anniversary and 44th Family Association Faculty of Humanities Udayana University

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, a scientific speech and book launching was held in the Soekarno Room, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, attended by the dean, lecturers, and students within the faculty as part of a series of events for the 67th Anniversary and 44th BK FIB. The event was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, Prof. I Nyoman Arya Wibawa, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. In his speech, he expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation to the chairperson and committee members who had worked hard to prepare the event and emphasized the importance of scientific speeches as a forum for disseminating lecturers' research findings, increasing academic visibility, and encouraging the participation of young lecturers. Forums such as this present an opportunity for lecturers to present their research findings, thereby promoting the visibility and image of the Faculty of Humanities.

The event continued with scientific speeches by three speakers from the Faculty of Humanities, with the first speech delivered by a lecturer from the Bachelor of Indonesian Literature, Dr. I Gusti Ayu Agung Mas Triandayani, S.S., M.Hum, who said that literary texts play a major role as documentation of cultural values and as a unifying force for the nation. Next, Dr. Silvia Damayanti, S.S., M.Hum. from the Bachelor of Japanese Literature discussed issues related to critical discourse analysis in a picture book on disaster education titled “Yuzu-Chan” regarding the important role of books in providing early training in disaster preparedness for children in Japan. Literature is said to become a useful learning media for children. Picture books are packaged using diction that is easy for young children to understand. This is one of the efforts to train preparedness in facing disasters and increase awareness and alertness to the existence of disasters through literary works.

The scientific speech was continued by a lecturer from the Bachelor of English Literature, Dr. Putu Weddha Savitri, S.S., M.Hum., who stated that synonyms are not always interchangeable because the meaning of words is formed by collocation and context, not just dictionary definitions. Corpus media was used for data analysis, with findings such as magnifique, superbe, extraordinaire, étonnant, and remarquable, which have different evaluative nuances ranging from positive to neutral to ambivalent. The research finding of this study emphasizes the importance of Corpus Linguistics as the key to objective empirical analysis. The final session of the event was the book launching of 16 books involving lecturers from the Faculty of Humanities, namely the book “Balinese, Sasak, and Sumbawa”, a chapter in a book entitled The Oxford Guide to the Malayo-Polynesian Languages of Southeast Asia (Oxford University Press).
