Students of the Indonesian Literature Study Program, FIB Unud, Hold a Drama Performance as a Part of the Project-Based Final Exam for the Drama Studies Course

The fourth semester students of the Indonesian Literature Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, held a drama performance as a form of final exam for the project of the Indonesian Drama Studies course. This performance was held for two days with different performance. Class A students held this performance on Thursday (19/06/2025) and Class B on Friday (20/06/2025) at the Widya Sabha Mandala Auditorium, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. The Indonesian Drama Study course taught by Jalu Norva Illa Putra, S.S., M.A., and Eirenne Pridari Sinsya Dewi, S.S., M.Ed., was designed to develop students' understanding of drama works through performance practices.

The performances presented by class A students were three different dramas. All three were performed in turns. The first drama was entitled, Wek-Wek which was an adaptation of a script by Iwan Simatupang and Anton Chekov. This drama is a satirical comedy that wraps criticism of social reality with humor, satire, and the stupidity of the characters in the drama. The second drama was titled Srikandi Edian, which was an adaptation of a script by Sang Aru (Hardjono Wiryosoestrino). The drama was about that awakens of the character of Srikandi from the world of wayang to the contemporary world by depicting hope and persistence in struggling to seek knowledge. The third drama that also provided a moral message through its performance was an adaptation of a drama script by Wisran Hadi entitled Perempuan Salah Langkah. It was a satirical drama that criticized the struggle of women who had lost their way and instead foster new myths.

The performance by Class B students presented two dramas from two different groups. The two drama scripts that were performed, presented different nuances but were equally strong in their messages and presentations. The first performance, an adaptation of the drama script Orang Kasar, by Anton Chekov adapted by WS Rendra, presented an adaptation with a deep local and psychological touch, highlighting human relations in tense situations through social and emotional conflicts in the story, but had a humorous touch. The second drama was an adaptation of the script Operation by Putu Wijaya staged with the author's typical absurd theatrical approach, depicting a complex and confusing social situation with a plot twist at the end of the story.

Before this performance, students had conducted an analysis, reviewing each part of the drama script that was taken to be performed. The process of reviewing this drama script had been carried out from the beginning to the middle of the semester. In the middle of the next semester, students worked on drama scripts that were staged and adapted according to the characteristics of each group. This performance was not only part of the academic evaluation, but also a medium for strengthening the competence of appreciation, analysis, and creative expression of drama. This activity proved that a project-based approach could strengthen students' active involvement in understanding and interpreting literary works, especially the drama genre.
