The Yellow Campus Responds to the Earth: The Academic Community of the Faculty of Humanities Udayana University collaborates to Care for the Mangrove Ecosystem

The Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University once again demonstrated its commitment to the environment and natural balance by conducting a community service program titled “Mangrove Care Action: From Campus to Nature” (Mangrove Care Action: Dari Kampus untuk Alam) on Sunday, September 20, 2026. This community service is part of the series of activities for the 45th Alumni Association and the 68th Anniversary of the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University (BK ke-45 and HUT ke-68 FIB Unud) carrying the theme “Echoes of the Yellow Campus: Nurturing Tradition, Responding to the Earth” (Gema Kampus Kuning: Merawat Tradisi, Merespons Bumi). Held at Wana Segara Kertih, Kedonganan, the community service was attended by the decanate ranks, lecturers from the study programs within FIB Unud, and freshmen.

The Head of the Committee, Rudy Sugiarta, accompanied by the Vice Chairman of the Student Senate of the Faculty of Humanities (SMFIB), Komang Wahyu Mahaputra, emphasized that this mangrove clean-up is not merely a regular community service action. Both echoed a similar message that nature conservation to prevent abrasion is a shared responsibility of all parties, not just the duty of the local community or area management. They hoped that this activity could spark collective awareness so that the care in nurturing the environment can be continuously carried out and implemented sustainably in daily life.

The event was then officially opened by the Dean of Faculty of Humanities, Prof. I Nyoman Aryawibawa, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. He stated that this activity is a tangible manifestation of the implementation of the Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education) on the pillar of community service. He asserted that this step is highly in line with this year's celebration theme, which is "Responding to the Earth," where the entire academic community has an absolute obligation to directly care for the earth to tackle various environmental issues.

The clean-up action in the mangrove area became the main focus of this community service activity. The specific target was focused on the removal of inorganic waste, while organic waste was left on-site to decompose naturally. The enthusiasm of the freshmen visibly peaked when they went straight down into the muddy area with seawater puddles reaching their lower thighs. In its execution, there were no barriers or rigid group divisions. All parties, including the decanate and lecturers, mingled together with the students to work collectively in cleaning the sea area and muddy coast. The dedication of all participants yielded results with the collection of approximately three bags filled with inorganic waste from the conservation area.

Responding to this environmental action, the representative of the Wana Segara Kertih management expressed deep appreciation for the care and assistance from the academic community of Faculty of Humanities. They emphasized that the effort to care for mangroves is actually much more essential and challenging compared to merely planting them, considering the high threat to the ecosystem's survival from ocean currents and the movement of trash. Furthermore, the management also educated the participants about the immense ecological benefits of mangroves, which are able to prevent abrasion, act as a protective habitat for marine biota, and have the ability to produce five times more oxygen than terrestrial plants while being highly effective in absorbing carbon.

In addition to the ecological benefits, the management representative also mentioned the potential of the mangrove plants, specifically the pidada (pidate) fruit, which can be processed into derivative products such as soap and syrup and has connections to the needs of traditional ceremonial facilities in Bali. This community service activity rich in environmental education values. The activity was then closed with a certificate and souvenir handover session from the Head of the Committee, lecturer representatives, and the Dean of FIB Unud to the Wana Segara Kertih management and followed by a joint documentation session.
