Two Archaeology Students from the Faculty of Humanities Udayana University participated in Basic Underwater Cultural Heritage Technical Guidance in Tulamben
Denpasar, December 6, 2025 - Two students from the Bahelor of Archaeology Faculty of Humanities Udayana University, namely Lalu Sunandy Teguh Drayaanata and Vierani Alya Setyawan, year semester 2024 who participated in the Basic Level Underwater Cultural Heritage Technical Guidance activity. It was held on December 6-13, 2025 in Tulamben, Bali. The main diving location was in the USAT Liberty Wreck area.
This activity was organized by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) together with BPK Region XV, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. The aim was to broaden the participants' knowledge of underwater cultural heritage, as well as to train their sensitivity and skills in reading cultural heritage professionally and with integrity. The event began with an introductory workshop on underwater cultural heritage, including excavation methods that can be used during diving, presented by Ahmad Surya Ramadhan, S.S., M.A. as the guest speaker. The diving theory materials covers an introduction to diving equipment, underwater communication techniques, and basic knowledge of open water diving.
The practical process was carried out through diving skill training in a swimming pool, before continuing with dives in the sea. Participants make two dives per day with a maximum depth of 12 meters, then increase to 18 meters on the following day. During these dives, participants can see the wreck of the USAT Liberty firsthand, focusing on repeating and consolidating the diving skills they have learned previously. This activity focuses on basic diving training and achieving open water competency, rather than on observation or in-depth research, as the participants are still beginners.
All activities were supervised by certified professional diving instructors. The training is conducted through the Yayasan Anak Selam Nusantara as a training center that follows the standards of Scuba Schools International (SSI), and is supported by Diver Alert Network (DAN) diving insurance to ensure the safety of participants. The main challenge in this activity is the initial adaptation process when diving. Support comes from the lecturers of the Bachelor of Archaeology Faculty of Humanities Udayana University, particularly Kristiawan, S.S., M.A. as the advisor and Zuraidah, S.S., M.Si. as Coordinator of the Bachelor of Archaeology who encouraged students to obtain competency certificates.
