Balinese Literature Study Program of FIB Unud Holds Practitioner Public Lecture, Exploring the Role of Digital Journalism from News to Scientific Works

DENPASAR – The Balinese Literature Study Program, Faculty of Humanity, Udayana University (FIB Unud), organized a Practitioner Public Lecture titled "Digital Journalism: From News to Scientific Works" ("Jurnalistik Digital: Dari Berita ke Karya Ilmiah") on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Held from 10:00 to 12:00 WITA in the Priyono Room, Poerbatjaraka Building, FIB Unud, this activity which forms part of the 7th-semester Journalism course was attended by the Coordinator of the Balinese Literature Study Program, lecturers, and Balinese Literature students from the 2023–2025 cohorts.

The event began with an introduction of the speaker's profile by the lecturer of the Journalism course, I Made Agus A. Hadi Sutresna, S.S., M.Hum., who served as the moderator. This practitioner lecture featured Putu Sosiawan, S.S., M.Pd., a 2010 alumnus of the Balinese Literature Study Program at FIB Unud who previously worked as a journalist for the Bali Post daily newspaper (2014–2018) and currently serves as a Data and Information Processor in the Public Relations Division of Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha), Singaraja.

In his presentation, Putu Sosiawan emphasized that journalistic skills do not stop in the newsroom; rather, they encompass thoroughness in verifying sources, critical thinking, and accurately processing facts for the public interest. These competencies are highly relevant for application across various professional fields, such as higher education public relations, government institutions, the business sector, and research institutions.

Furthermore, he explained that the stages of journalistic work closely parallel the process of writing student papers and scientific works. Both require the ability to identify issues, gather data through interviews and credible references, distinguish between facts and opinions, and structure information systematically and accountably.

Amidst the rapid flow of digital information, Balinese Literature students were also encouraged to utilize various digital platforms such as popular articles, short videos, infographics, podcasts, and social media to document traditions and creatively introduce the Balinese language and literature to the younger generation. Mastering the ability to adapt academic studies into ethical and verified public communication formats serves as vital preparation for students entering the professional world.

The presentation was followed by a highly interactive question-and-answer session. Prior to the conclusion of the Q&A session, the Coordinator of the Balinese Literature Study Program at FIB Unud, Drs. I Ketut Ngurah Sulibra, M.Hum., stated that practitioner lectures like this are highly beneficial for enabling Balinese Literature students to hone practical skills in digital literacy and public communication, while building career readiness that supports the achievement of Key Performance Indicators (Indikator Kinerja Utama / IKU) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the aspects of Quality Education and Well-being. He also emphasized that presenting alumni as practitioners is essential to provide a concrete illustration of the graduate profile and career prospects of the Balinese Literature Study Program.
